Sepia photo effect

Sepia is the brown tint of photographs from a century ago. It flatters portraits, hides mismatched colors and gives wedding invitations, anniversary posts and family-tree pictures a timeless feel. Open the photo and it is already sepia; adjust it and download.

How to use it

  1. Choose your photo: the “Effect” is already set to “Sepia”.
  2. Move “Brightness” and “Contrast” until the tones look right; a touch more contrast makes it look like a real print.
  3. Tap “Create image” and download it.

Getting a convincing old-photo look

Real sepia prints have soft shadows and no pure black, so keep the contrast moderate and raise the brightness a touch if faces go dark. Portraits with a simple background and natural light convert best; a busy, colorful scene loses its structure once the color is gone. For a faded or scratched finish on top, apply the Vintage filter afterwards.

Sepia or black and white?

Black and white is sharper and more modern; sepia is warmer and softer. Both are in the “Effect” menu, so you can switch between them on the same photo and compare before downloading. Neither changes the resolution, and the brightness curve lifts shadows more than highlights, so faces don’t burn out when you brighten.

Questions and answers

Can I control how strong the sepia is?

Here it is applied fully. For a lighter tint, open photo filters, pick Sepia or Vintage and lower the intensity.

Does it work on several photos at once?

One photo at a time, so you can adjust each one. For a quick plain black and white, there is also black and white photo.

Can I print it?

Yes: the resolution is the same as the original, so it prints as well as the color photo. For a vintage frame, add a white border with add border and the “Polaroid” style.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Your photos never leave your device and nobody else can see them.
