Change the background color of a photo

Some ID badges and work permits want a blue background, a product-style portrait looks better on neutral gray, and a profile picture pops on a bold color. Pick the photo, choose the color and the AI does the cutting for you.

Manual retouch (brush)

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo with a person in it.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the AI separates the person from the background.
  3. The “Color” picker is already open: pick the color, or switch “Background” to “Blurred”, “Transparent”, “White” or “Black”.
  4. Tap “Create image” and download it.

Pick a color that matches the requirement

If a form specifies a color, use its own example as a reference: common requests are plain blue for some work and student IDs and light gray or white for most other cards. Pick a flat, even tone rather than a dark or saturated one, so the edges of hair and shoulders blend in. When no color is required, a light tone keeps the attention on the face.

Blurred or transparent instead of a color

Under “Background” you can also keep the original scene blurred, like a phone’s portrait mode, or export a transparent PNG to put the person on a flyer, a slide or another photo. The cut-out works best on front-facing photos of people in good light; it isn’t made for products or animals.

Questions and answers

Is a colored AI background valid for a passport or ID card?

Usually not: those photos must be unedited. Use it for badges, portals and profiles, and for official documents take the photo against a wall of the required color.

The edges look rough. Can I fix them?

Yes. Under “Manual retouch (brush)”, “Erase background” removes leftover bits and “Restore photo” paints back anything that was cut, such as a strand of hair.

Where are the white and transparent options?

Here too, under “Background”. There are also direct pages for a white background, a transparent PNG and a blurred background.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Your photos never leave your device and nobody else can see them.
