Change the DPI of an image

Many print shops and forms ask for images “at 300 DPI”. DPI is just a value inside the file that says what size it prints at; here we change it without touching the pixels, so the image loses no quality.

DPI

How to use it

  1. Choose the DPI you’ve been asked for (usually 300).
  2. Choose your images.
  3. Download the images: below each one you’ll see the size it will print at.

What is DPI?

DPI (dots per inch) says how many pixels go into each inch when printing. A 1200 × 1800 px photo at 300 DPI prints at 4 × 6 in (10.2 × 15.2 cm). If you need a bigger size at 300 DPI, you need more pixels: use upscale image.

No quality lost

In JPG we change the JFIF header and the EXIF resolution value; in PNG, the pHYs chunk. The image stays identical, pixel for pixel.

Questions and answers

Will my photo look better at 300 DPI?

On screen it looks the same. DPI only changes the print size.

Does it work with HEIC or WebP?

Yes: those images are saved as PNG, which keeps every pixel, with the DPI you chose.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Your photos never leave your device and nobody else can see them.
