Upscale an image to twice its resolution

A photo saved from WhatsApp, an old 640-pixel picture or a small logo looks soft when you print it or show it on a big screen. Here the image is enlarged to twice its width and height with resampling that keeps edges clean, and you can sharpen it on top.

How to use it

  1. Choose the image.
  2. “Double resolution (2× crisp)” is already ticked. Adjust “Sharpness / Focus”, “Clarity” and “Light & shadows” to taste.
  3. Tap “Enhance photo” and download the enlarged image.

What 2× really does

The image goes from, say, 800 × 600 to 1600 × 1200 pixels: four times as many pixels. The new pixels are calculated from the ones around them with a smoothing filter and then sharpened, so edges and text stay crisp instead of blocky. It is not generative AI: it can’t invent a face, hair or lettering that wasn’t in the original. A blurry photo becomes a larger, cleaner-edged blurry photo, not a sharp one.

When it is worth it

Small photos for printing (a 1000-pixel photo prints well at 10 × 15 cm after doubling), screenshots to show on a slide, old low-resolution pictures and profile photos that a site displays larger than they are. For a photo that is already 12 megapixels, doubling only makes the file bigger: use the sharpening sliders with the 2× option off instead.

Questions and answers

Can I upscale 4× or to an exact size?

The tool doubles once. For an exact size, set the pixels with resize image afterwards; running the 2× twice adds no real detail.

What is the difference from “enhance photo quality”?

Enhance photo quality is the same tool with the 2× option off: it sharpens and recovers light at the original size. This page starts with the doubling enabled.

Does it fix pixelated images?

It smooths the blocks and sharpens the edges, so a pixelated image looks cleaner, but the missing detail can’t be recovered.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Your photos never leave your device and nobody else can see them.
