Colorize old photos with AI

Choose a black and white photo of your grandparents, your childhood or your hometown and the AI adds color: skin, sky, plants and clothes. It all happens on your device, so your family photos are never uploaded anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose a black and white (or sepia) photo.
  2. The first time, the AI downloads (130 MB, best on Wi-Fi). After that it stays saved.
  3. Move “Color strength” until it looks natural.
  4. Tap “Download color photo”.

How does it work?

We use DDColor, an openly licensed AI model that learned from millions of photos which colors things usually have. The AI only decides the color: the light and detail come from your original photo, so it keeps all its sharpness.

For the best results

Scan the photo or shoot it straight on, without glare. If it’s scratched or faded, run it through restore old photos first.

Questions and answers

Are the colors the real ones?

They’re the most likely colors according to the AI, not the ones the scene actually had. A dress may come out in a different color: think of it as a recreation.

Why is it slow the first time?

Because the AI downloads to your browser. After that it doesn’t download again and runs much faster.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, although on basic phones it can take a minute. It’s faster on a computer.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Your photos never leave your device and nobody else can see them.
