Convert JPG to WebP
If you run a website, a WordPress blog or an online shop, WebP images load faster and raise your page speed score. Convert product photos and banners here, set the quality and download them ready to upload.
How to use it
- Choose one or more JPG or PNG images.
- Set “Quality”: 80% is the usual sweet spot for web images.
- Download the .webp files and upload them to your site.
How much lighter?
At the same visible quality a WebP photo weighs about 25 to 35% less than its JPG, and WebP also supports transparency, so it can replace both JPG and PNG. Every current browser displays it. Keep the quality between 75 and 85% for photos; go higher only for images with text or fine lines, where compression artifacts show first.
Before converting, fix the size
A new format doesn’t fix a 4000-pixel-wide image in a 1200-pixel slot. Scale product photos and banners to the width they are shown at with resize image, then convert them here. The two steps together often cut a page’s image weight by more than half.
Questions and answers
Why did I get a PNG instead of a WebP?
Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac can display WebP but can’t create it. On those browsers we save a PNG and say so under the photo. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or an Android device to get WebP.
Do I lose quality?
WebP is lossy like JPG, so each conversion loses a little; at 80% it isn’t visible. Keep the originals for future edits.
Can I convert back to JPG?
Yes, with WebP to JPG. If what you need is a smaller JPG rather than a new format, use compress image.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Everything is processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Your photos never leave your device and nobody else can see them.
